What Is Oud Fragrance? The Complete Guide to Oud Perfume

By Scent Haus | Reading time: 5 minutes

You catch it across a room, deep, smoky, almost impossibly rich, and you can't name it. If that moment sounds familiar, what you encountered was almost certainly oud. It's one of perfumery's most compelling ingredients, prized across cultures for centuries, and still surprisingly little understood in the UK. This guide explains exactly what oud is, where it comes from, how it smells, and how to find the right oud fragrance for you.

What Oud Is, and Where It Comes From

Oud, also known as agarwood, oudh or aloeswood, is a fragrant, resinous heartwood formed inside the Aquilaria tree, a large evergreen native to South and Southeast Asia. The species grows across a vast region stretching from the northeastern Himalayas through the tropical forests of Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Under normal conditions, Aquilaria wood is pale and odourless. The transformation begins when the tree becomes infected by a specific mould, most commonly from the Phialophora genus. In response, the tree produces a dark, fragrant oleoresin as a defence mechanism. Over months and years, this resin saturates the surrounding wood, turning it deep brown or black and filling it with the aromatic compounds that give oud its extraordinary character. The resulting resin-saturated wood is what perfumers call oud.

Not every Aquilaria tree produces this resin. In the wild, only a small proportion of trees are naturally infected, which is one of the reasons genuine oud oil commands such exceptional prices. Oud has been treasured across cultures for thousands of years, in ancient Sanskrit texts, in the Bible as aloes, in Gulf tradition where burning oud chips (bukhoor) remains an everyday ritual, and in Japanese kodo, the art of listening to incense.

How Oud Oil Is Made and Why It Is So Prized

Wild agarwood has become increasingly scarce due to decades of unsustainable harvesting. Aquilaria species are now listed on CITES Appendix II, which regulates international trade in the species. Most commercial oud production today comes from plantation-grown trees deliberately inoculated with the mould infection under controlled conditions.

Once harvested, oud oil is extracted primarily through steam distillation: wood chips are soaked in water, then steamed, and the aromatic oil separates as the vapour cools. Supercritical CO₂ extraction is a newer method that captures a broader aromatic spectrum. A single millilitre of high-grade natural oud oil can cost hundreds of pounds, which explains why synthetic and blended oud materials are widely used in Western perfumery.

At Scent Haus, we use high-quality fragrance materials to capture the essential character of oud, its warmth, smokiness, depth and longevity, in an accessible 20% Eau de Parfum format, crafted for everyday UK wear. We believe in being transparent about what we do: our fragrances are inspired by some of the world's finest perfumes, never claimed to be the originals.

What Oud Smells Like and How to Wear It

Oud is one of the most complex single ingredients in perfumery. No two oud oils smell exactly alike, the character varies with the tree species, region, age of the wood, and extraction method. That said, most oud profiles share a recognisable set of qualities:

  • Deep and woody: the foundation is a rich, resinous woodiness, darker and heavier than sandalwood or cedar, more enveloping than vetiver
  • Smoky: a characteristic smokiness runs through most oud profiles, ranging from gentle warmth to intense, incense-like density
  • Animalic depth: quality oud carries a subtle animalic character, something between old leather, dried fruit and fur, that adds layers of intrigue
  • Resinous sweetness: beneath the smoke and wood sits a quiet amber-like sweetness that softens the overall effect
  • Evolution on skin: oud reveals itself slowly, shifting over hours as top-note carriers fade and the base settles deeper into the skin

Regional oud profiles differ markedly: Cambodian oud tends to be the most refined, with subtle fruity sweetness and the least animalic edge, often the most accessible starting point for Western tastes. Hindi (Indian) oud is the most intense: smoky, leathery and powerfully present. If you're new to the category, a Cambodian-style profile, or an oud blended with rose or amber, is usually the most comfortable introduction.

How to Wear Oud

As a base note with exceptional longevity, a small amount of oud goes a long way. Warmer months may call for lighter oud blends, amber-oud or woody-oud compositions that carry some warmth without the full animalic weight. Richer, smokier oud profiles come into their own in autumn and winter, and are particularly well suited to evenings or occasions where you want real presence. If you're drawn to floral fragrances, a rose-oud blend is the natural starting point; if you love spice, try a cardamom or saffron oud.

Because oud fragrances can be polarising, we always recommend testing on skin before committing to a full bottle. Our 5ml fragrance sample collection lets you try multiple oriental styles at low cost before choosing your signature scent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is oud the same as agarwood?

Yes. Oud is the Arabic name for agarwood. The material is also known as aloeswood, eaglewood or oudh in different regional traditions, all refer to the same resinous heartwood from infected Aquilaria trees.

Why is oud so expensive?

Because the resin-producing infection is rare and unpredictable, and the wood takes years to mature. Wild Aquilaria trees are now endangered due to overharvesting, and the distillation process is laborious. These factors together make natural oud oil one of the most expensive fragrance ingredients in existence.

Can I wear oud fragrance every day?

Absolutely. Lighter oud blends, those paired with amber, wood or subtle spice, work beautifully for everyday wear, particularly in cooler seasons. Heavy, smoky profiles are better suited to evenings or occasions where you want greater presence. Because oud is a base note with real staying power, a small amount is usually enough.

What is the difference between oud and other dark base notes?

Sandalwood is creamy and gentle; oud is heavier, smokier and more complex. Amber is sweet and resinous but lacks oud's animalic dimension. Vetiver is cool and earthy; oud is warmer and more opulent. Patchouli shares earthy depth but is less multifaceted. Oud is, in most respects, in a category of its own.
